Helping My Boys to Learn to Read and Write (Part 1)

Posted on: Friday, October 10, 2008

Favourite line from the book: ……high expectations have a positive effect……

Sometime ago I have written that I have read the book on ‘How to Help Your Child Read and Write’ but I have never gone into the details of the book. Personally this book is also listed under my ‘bible list’ because from time to time I will refer to it to refresh some memories or even gain new ideas on how to help my boys enjoy reading and writing.

Basically this book comprises on chapters of different age group like reading and writing from:

  • Birth to Age 4
  • Age 4 to Age 7
  • Age 7 to Age 11

The author has used his own kids as practical evidence by collecting data in the form of video-clips, observation diaries and sample of children’s text over a 10-year period. After which he compared their development with published case-studies of other children.

He also recommends books for children and also writes on how to choose books for children of different age. At the end of every chapter, there will be a list of what to expect from the child at a certain age.

I will recommend this book because, I have notice the changes of my boys’ attitude towards books and writing. I am now also able to understand my 20 month old boy’s scribbles because I have learnt to communicate with him.

As for the rest of their development, I will share it in the later posts.
